Texas Texas is the second largest state in the Union. It has a greater area than Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Wisconsin combined. Only Alaska is larger but Texas has 30 times more people. It is the only one that was an Independent Republic before its admission to the Union. It gets its nickname, “The Lone Star State,” from the single star that marks the state flag.
Texas is from the Indian word, Tejas, used by the early Spanish settlers. Tejas means friendly. True to its meaning, Texans continue to live up to its name. Texas offers the visitor an assortment of varied geographical zones, a rich historical tradition, modern, culturally sophisticated cities and fabulous resorts.
